Valve Materials: WCB, CF8M and Trim Selection

Venturi Valves · Updated:

Quick answer

Material selection is more than choosing a steel or stainless-steel body. All wetted components, including trim, stem, bellows, seats and gaskets, must suit the chemistry, temperature, pressure and operating duty.

Valve Materials: WCB, CF8M and Trim Selection

What do WCB and CF8M designate?

WCB is a carbon-steel casting grade under ASTM A216. CF8M is an austenitic stainless casting grade used under ASTM A351. Neither code specifies every valve component or proves suitability for a duty. Do not interchange cast and forged material designations. State the specification, grade and component in the quotation.

Is a stainless body better for every fluid?

“Stainless” alone is not a selection rule. Identify concentration, temperature, chlorides or other contaminants, solids and cleaning chemicals. The same chemical can behave differently with temperature and concentration. Complete the process data and obtain a service-specific corrosion assessment when compatibility is uncertain.

How should trim and soft components be checked?

Even with a suitable body, seat rings, obturator surfaces, stem, packing and gaskets can be limiting components. Hardfacing may address wear but is not a universal corrosion solution. Identify the bellows alloy in globe valves and the seal ring and any layers in metal-seated butterfly valves.

How should material documents match the quotation?

Separate body and trim in the enquiry so offers can be compared. Agree inspection documents, heat or batch traceability and any additional material verification before ordering. A material certificate does not replace a chemical-compatibility assessment. Ask Venturi to identify every component covered by the proposed material combination.
