Metal-Seated Butterfly Valves: Double or Triple Offset?
Quick answer
Offset geometry and sealing materials are separate choices in a metal-seated butterfly valve. “High performance”, “double offset” and “triple offset” do not by themselves establish identical seats, temperature limits or bidirectional shut-off.

What changes between double and triple offset?
Offsets change shaft and disc geometry to reduce seat contact during opening. Triple-offset designs add an angular sealing geometry; many are torque-seated. The name does not tell you whether the seal ring is solid metal or laminated. Check the selected model’s section drawing and bill of materials.
Which components determine temperature limits?
Start with the body pressure-temperature rating, then check the seat ring, interlayers, stem packing, bearings and gaskets. A metal seat does not eliminate every non-metallic component. Chemical compatibility, thermal cycling and cleanliness must be assessed before accepting a high-temperature duty.
How is bidirectional tightness verified?
Specify normal flow, possible pressure directions with the valve closed, and maximum differential pressure. A preferred sealing direction or a lower reverse-pressure limit may apply. Request leakage performance with test medium, pressure, duration and direction. A result for one model cannot be transferred to another series.
Why do actuator and piping compatibility matter?
Opening, running and closing torques can differ. On torque-seated valves, end-position output must deliver the required closure without exceeding mechanical limits. Check face-to-face length, pipe bore and disc clearance for wafer, lug or flanged bodies. Dead-end duty needs separate model confirmation.
Preparing a short-lead-time enquiry
Send size, class, temperature, fluid, body connection, seat construction, leakage criteria and actuation details. Venturi evaluates short-lead-time supply options for metal-seated high-performance butterfly valves. Confirmed delivery depends on configuration, quantity, actuator and special testing.

Frequently asked questions
Is every high-performance butterfly valve metal-seated?+
No. Verify the seat material and construction in the model documentation.
Does triple offset automatically mean bidirectional?+
No. Check allowable differential pressure and sealing performance in both directions.
Is the body temperature rating enough?+
No. Seats, shaft seals, bearings and gaskets must also suit the service.
